Trenchless Balkans celebrated all things no-dig when it was hosted in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina in October last year.

The conference, hosted by International University of Sarajevo (IUS), included speakers and participants from Germany, Poland, Czechia, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Turkey, Serbia and Croatia.

The conference was focused on the pioneering techniques of Trenchless Technology for the installation, replacement or renewal of all underground utilities and their ability to minimise the need for excavation and surface disruption.

On Thursday, the conference featured opening speeches by Turkish Society for Infrastructure and Trenchless Technology Chairman Yasin Torun, International University of Sarajevo Rector Dr Erkan Türe, Ilidza Municipality Mayor Dr Senaid Memić, Sarajevo Water Utility General Manager Azra Muzur and Ambassador of Turkey to Bosnia Halil Ümit Cemaloğlu.

Thursday’s sessions focused on water loss control regulations; the first Turkish-built tunnel boring machine; new approaches in water management; water loss control and pressure management; and a water loss reduction project.

Friday’s sessions focused on durable PE100 pipes and the new no-dig tool of the PE100+ Association, horizontal directional drilling case studies from Kazakhstan, Iraq and Turkey; the effect of bentonite injection time of microtunnelling jacking forces; mechanised trenchless technologies for pipeline installations; and water utility economic decisions to reduce water loss.

On Friday afternoon, conference attendees had the opportunity to visit the plants of Sarajevo Water Utility.

More than 100 participants from ten countries also had the opportunity to develop their business networks for the southeast Europe trenchless market.
